Zechs is one of Oz's strongest, if not the strongest commanding officers and a good childhood friend of their leader, Treize. Throughout all of his battles Zechs has emerged victorious and because of his aggressive fighting style he has become known as the "Lightning Count."
Wearing a mask that represents the dark side of his personality he is able to fight the Gundam pilot Heero Yuy using one of the prototypes of the Gundams known as Tallgeese which was created by a man named Howard.
Without the mask, Zechs goes by his true name of Milliard Peacecraft and is the last surviving son of the Peacecraft family of the Cinq Kingdom (and Relena's brother). As Milliard he travels into space (after leaving Oz) and tries to represent the Earth to the colonies which are gearing up for war against it.
After the Tallgeese is destroyed Zechs takes command of the Wing Zero Gundam and is adversely effected by the Zero system. Back on Earth Zechs piloting Wing Zero comes up against Heero piloting Epyon.
Both being overtaken by the Zero system (both Epyon and Zero employ this system) the pilots emerge and take a break from fighting. When they are done resting they switch Gundams and Zechs becomes the leader of the White Fang rebel group with one intention - destroy the earth.
Although he may seem like a heartless tyrant his goal is the same of that of Treize - to show the careless inhabitants of Earth and Space the true horror of war so that the human race can finally achieve true peace.
