Last night I lost an external hard drive when a power surge 86-ed it.

It was plugged into a three-year-old APC surge protector and now when I turn the drive on, I get the power light for a brief instant and that's it. My computer automatically shut down when the surge hit and later on was fine--it was plugged into a two-year-old APC surge protector of exactly the same type.
I always thought APC was the best brand of protector. Then again, maybe the age had something to do with it.
Any recommendations for a replacement?
Any suggestions for what to do with a dead drive, like some magical way to resurrect it?
