Last night I lost an external hard drive when a power surge 86-ed it. Cry It was plugged into a three-year-old APC surge protector and now when I turn the drive on, I get the power light for a brief instant and that's it. My computer automatically shut down when the surge hit and later on was fine--it was plugged into a two-year-old APC surge protector of exactly the same type.

I always thought APC was the best brand of protector. Then again, maybe the age had something to do with it.

Any recommendations for a replacement?

Any suggestions for what to do with a dead drive, like some magical way to resurrect it?

I've never had any trouble with Belkin.

You also might want to try to replace the powersupply/cord/brick to the hard drive  Some modern power bricks have their own internal surge protecting apparati to protect the end product.

Thanks. Re power-supply replacement: Not exactly sure how I'd do that. It's a NewerTech mini stack.

Plus I've since discovered that none of my firewire ports are working anymore on my computer (a G5 iMac). Sad I'm going to reset the SMU and PRAM and whatever I can to try to restore the ports, but I may be out of luck.

This totally freaks me out.

Id second Belkin.  Though I too had thought APC was good. Never had an issue with them.
