Quote
Esteemed mangaka Kentaro Miura, known for his long running masterwork Berserk, has once again suspended serialisation of the manga, after only recently restarting it, apparently in order to play Idol Master.

“Taking a break from next chapter onwards” runs the next chapter preview; his remark in the index comments is: “I was lonely so I bought it, Idol Master, and an Xbox, fuhi.” ‘Fuhi’ is Nico freak slang.

OH FUCKING LOL.

After new manga that badly huh?
Found a page from a lost chapter titled, "Pot Calling The Kettle Black" if you're interested.  Tongue

Though to be honest, this is perhaps closer to the actual reaction:Cry

in the 20 years since berserk has started how many years has he actually worked?

300 chapters, compared to 520+ chapters for one piece since 1997.  not the same i know, but one piece comes out almost every week, so lets say 45 chapters a year, which is about right when you do the math.

if berserk came out at the same pace, we would have been at this point in 1996 or something like that.  i know the art is way more detailed and it was never intended as a weekly series, but he hasn't been working on the manga for 20 years.

It's probably a case of Miura knew how he was going to start and finish the series and a couple of things he wanted to get done through the middle like side characters and villains and such, but not Guts's journey to get to the end itself, and telling THAT story he wrote himself into a corner which he's been stalling for ages in order to get out of. They've been traveling to Elfheim while Midland fights Kushan for going on... 4, 5 years? Some cool shit's happened, but it's starting to get to the "Who cares? I'll come back in a couple of years and see if it's progressed" point.

Ok, here goes...

Borrowed the idea from an old SkullKnight.net post there, but when I looked up the original image buried away under folder after folder of Berserk stuff it was missing the last ten of so volumes, so have brought it up to date. The dates vary a little from their original, and while I'm guessing their source is better than where I found the dates I used, its only ever out by a few days. So, early on you can see I'm guessing Miura finding his feet with both the serialized version and volume versions, not to mention those earlier chapters had a slightly different format chapter/episode number wise. However, since volume six early on in 1993, up until volume thirty-one in late 2006 he has been releasing a volume at a very steady clip of on average one volume every one hundred and ninety days, not really skipping a beat for thirteen years straight. Now after doing something for so long, I can understand wanting to ease up a bit; would much rather have to wait a little longer on chapters than have Miura become frustrated with, rush, force or God-Hand-forbid give up on doing Berserk. But again, we've had consistency of releases for so long I don't think the criticism and complaining (or  even sarcasm?) that's been leveled at him is really fair after only his first change of pace since beginning the series back in the late 1980's, early 1990's. I think I understand where its coming from, sure, given most of us made a start on the series when there was already a vast back catalog of material to catch up on... then once we were up to day, patiences are tested. Just don't think its justified.

Now then, on the topic of other authors.

Not all that familiar with One Piece, could I trouble someone to point me in the direction of some good sample images?
Had a hard time of it trying to find two page spreads for example to put up opposite some of Berserk's for contrast.

From a quick Google search though, I know which would take me (much) longer to trace, let alone draw.  Tongue

Im pretty sure Miura writes and draws Berserk all by his lonesome, while Oda has a team of helpers working with him everyday getting the One Piece chapters done.

That he does, same with Naruto and others. However, there is such a thing as story progression, which Berserk has badly lacked ever since Guts and Co. fought those alligator monsters on the beach back in Vol. 28 and instead of the lame excuses, he could just go "Writer's block, brb" and that'd be understandable.
