It has been really quiet on the anime front lately. Any word on new releases from FX or anyone, BMVtoys?

I think the age of the HK DVD is finally over. Let it rest in peace.

Well, you are mostly right. It's definitely not how it used to be. But they do still release good sets. I am sure there are still a few like me who prefers to just nab up the sets on the cheep rather than rent and burn. I might end up breaking down soon and doing just that tho.

As for why BMVtoys has not responded, I found out he is in the hospital, so no inside updates for a while.

I just got the cowboy bebop remix collection to replace my old hk.

I set them up on two tvs just using the tvs speakers and dear god the difference was painfull.

I think the think packs and bargin box sets have taken their toal on hks.

why spend 21+ shipping on the hk bebop when i can spend 32 for the real deal.

I just cant see them comming back in any shape similar to their hey day in years past

The HK scene is not really over it just has slowed down a bit.

I just recently bought Dragon Ball on HK dvd(6 boxsets by MI/AC) for 180.00. Where the R1 release is like 40 bucks and up for a boxset and the boxsets are broken up into sagas, forgot how many boxsets there are but I think it was like 7 or 8  for the R1 release.

Some shows will be cheaper on HK dvd, depending on what show you are looking to buy.

If a show has alot of episodes and the price is high for the boxsets then I prefer to go with the HK dvd sets.

The sets are still coming out, people here just seem to have lost interest.

It seems to me that a number of factors have contributed to the HK "recession" we all seem to be noticing:

1) Crackdowns on every level, in both HK and domestically.
2) The increasing popularity (and thus decreasing price) of R1 boxsets
3) The speed and efficiency with which new shows are released (this is mainly a factor for people, such as myself, who used HK's as a form of fansubs, and option to be able to watch semi-professionally done releases of shows that were not yet domestically licensed).  Frankly, most everything worth watching these days is immediately nabbed up by one of the major domestic distributors.

There's still a place for HK's, but it is certainly a marginal one.

I haven't gotten an hk set in at least 3 years for the simple reason they look like crap on an hdtv-when you take a 6 dvd set on dvd9s and compress it down to 3 dvd9s it's gonna look bad-not that a lot of older r1 dvds look all that good either.

Ive been trying to dump my hks and have had a lot of trouble getting rid of them even when i offer them at 5 or less a disc.

I just think that R1s have gotten so much better in quality, while many hks have gotten worse.  they will always be around, but i think their heyday is long gone, at least in the us.

...maybe so, but there's still some noteworthy HKDVD releases that will probably NEVER come out in R1, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (main series and side story/Gaiden sets) for example - but those heady, exciting days of Manga ("Green M") and their brave releases of '70's and '80's shows *still* not available in R1 are probably....over Sad

I'll still buy HKDVD though, depending on what it is and how much cash I have to spend.

wow, this place is still alive....sorta Smiley

I agree with willtopower, that there is a place for HK dvd's but a marginal one.
With the quality of of digisubs these days, why go back to HK's. The newest One Piece releases are released in full HD encodes, like 550mb in the H246(or something) container. It's really amazing. They blow HK releases right out of the water. And with higher internet speeds, it's pretty easy to download full dvd's. You download them and burn em for 10 bucks.
For some sets I understand it's easier and a lot cheaper to buy the HK's, like ranma. Then if the quality difference is minimal, go for it.
But apart from that, I don't see people spending much money on them anymore.

Anyway, it's great to see some people are still around, Grapeape Wink

I think for some shows that seem unlikely to ever come out here like victory gundam and the fist of the north star tv show, i think there will always be a market.

Also things like sailor moon, that are near impossible to get for any sane price.  I once saw a set of Season 3(the thinpack rerelease that geneon did before the lost the liscence) on amazon marketplace for over a grand.  I wanted to ask the guy if sailor moon herself had signed the set.

I typically buy HK's of sets that haven't been released in R1

Cyborg 009, Legend of the galactic heroes, later parts of Detective Conan, rare anime movies, ect
