new boards! woo!

So it's that time of year that I format my comp  and start anew. Not for any good reason other than I'd rather do it when I'm prepared than when I'm un-prepared.

So far I am going to install:

XP (obviously)
irfanview - good for images.
Azureus - need the torrents
firefox - duh
minifox theme for firefox - need the small icons
linkification - can't surf w/o it
Premiere and Photoshop Elements
Guild Wars
K-lite codec pack - comes with media player classic, but i hate the playlist on it.
skype
iTunes
winrar
window blinds

Those are pretty much the standard apps i install when i format.

Any suggestions on some apps to shake it up a bit?
Or any apps that are better versions of what i'm using?

Thanks!

I'm turning over a new leaf and only using programs I purchased, so Photoshop CS2 ( I bought the elements thay have most of the functionalty I use), ad-aware (i like spybot better anyway :p), and ws-ftp are out.

The last time I used wimamp was like 6 years ago, it started to be a bit of a resource hog. Is it still?

Hmm I'll have to check out Pamella, I have friends that I mostly talk with them through skype, so that would be cool.

Any suggestions on an okay burning program?

You should try FoxIt Reader for PDF's there is no install and it is only 2.5 megs, very light weight.

I've used Nero, but it also always seemed so bulky. But I guess I'm being a lil too picky.

I have emulators also hehe, but I end up playing them like once a year.

VLC seems like a standard, I should give it a real shot. I tried it once and didn't like it, but I can't remember what I didn't like about it.

File control/navigation isn't as clever as it could be, but it does play most stuff including things that others don't or don't without effort on user's part.

It can fill the time sometimes if nothing else. And I've fond memories of some games, even if I'm not /raring/ to play them.

Nero's never really failed me. Except when I burn too fast. Coasters. Meh. It does data, sound, video, mixed media,, on CD/DVDs; like you'd expect. Tho I rip audio CDs with CD extractor. Also, PowerDVD, for watching DVDs. Tho there may be a free/cheaper program that does this also/better. Of course there's the tv. ¬¬ lol

How does it load files? Does it slow and temp-freeze firefox? Tho I get that with loading generally, firefox just locks up while it loads. Really annoying.

I don't know, I usually save my pdf's to my desktop/read/then delete. I don't like opening up files like that directly through browsers.

there is actually a pretty big security hole in firefox concerning PDFs...people can exploit the code that firefox uses to open up pdf files internally, so my suggestion is to use acrobat or another 3rd party reader at all times, just DON'T USE FIREFOX :p  great browser, but thats one major hole.

FireFTP - ftp program that is build into firefox... sure beats Cuteftp (for some reason, Cuteftp always wanted to install my printer drivers every time I started the program... even after a format/clean install... frown) and it is always accessible from your tools menu in Firefox...

Well I found a free well rated cd/dvd burning program. It's called deepburner.

http://www.deepburner.com

The free version doesn't let you burn video dvd's, but I don't burn those anyway. I mostly just make data dvds/cds.

Well I think I'm all set to start wiping/reinstalling. See you all in a few hours.

Uxtheme hack is better than windows blinds or Style xp .

Electric sheep is the best screen saver too imo.
